Knee pads: what EN 14404 type and level mean

EN 14404 classifies knee protectors for people who work kneeling. Type 1 means standalone knee pads strapped to the leg; Type 2 means pads inserted into the knee pad pockets of work trousers. The level describes puncture resistance: Level 0 for flat, clean floors, Level 1 where there may be small sharp objects on the ground such as screws or stones. Type 2 knee pads only protect when paired with compatible trousers: check the combination before ordering for the whole team.

How to choose by sector and use

In logistics and retail the main need is opening boxes without injury: a knife with an auto-retracting blade reduces accidental cuts when the blade leaves the material. In construction and building services you need knee pads, a head torch to work hands-free and a sturdy holdall to carry personal PPE and footwear. For maintenance and technical services, LED lights that clip onto the helmet are useful, as are wipes to clean grease and stubborn dirt off hands when there is no sink nearby.

First aid and signage: completing the kit

First aid kits are available for workplaces, sized by number of people, and for vehicles. What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 knee pads?

Both fall under EN 14404: Type 1 straps to the leg and can be used with any trousers, Type 2 are inserts that slide into the dedicated pockets of compatible work trousers.

Does a safety knife eliminate the risk of cuts?

It reduces it, because the blade retracts or stays shielded when not in use, but it does not eliminate it. Where the risk assessment requires it, suitable cut-resistant gloves must still be worn.

Can head torches be used on a safety helmet?

There are LED lights designed for helmets and bump caps, and universal clips to attach a head torch to the helmet. Compatibility with your model is stated on the product page.

Which first aid kit does my company need?

It depends on the number of workers and the company's risk category. You will find kits sized for 25 and 100 people and vehicle kits; contents should be checked with your occupational health adviser.

Do industrial wipes replace hand washing?

No, they are a solution for when soap and water are not available, for example in the van or on site. Hands should be washed normally as soon as possible.
