Safety glasses for work
Safety glasses protect against fragments, swarf and particles thrown off during machining, assembly, construction and warehouse work. They are lightweight and worn for the whole shift, so comfort and coated lenses make all the difference.
Reading the markings
- EN 166: optical class (1 is best for prolonged use) and mechanical strength, S for increased robustness or F for low-energy impact.
- EN 170: UV filter, typical of clear lenses for indoor use.
- EN 172: sun glare filter for industrial use, for outdoor work.
- EN ISO 16321: the newest standard, found on some models.
- The letters K and N indicate anti-scratch and anti-fog coatings: models with KN in the name have both.
How to choose
Clear lens for indoors, tinted or mirrored for outdoors; wraparound models for good side protection; versions with a seal and elastic strap for dusty environments. If the risk includes liquids or fine dust, move up to safety goggles; to protect the whole face consider visors. Glasses with a shade 5 filter for gas welding are in the welding glassescategory.

What does KN mean on safety glasses?
K indicates resistance to surface damage from fine particles (anti-scratch), N resistance to fogging. These coatings are useful for anyone wearing glasses for the whole shift.
Which lens colour should I choose for safety glasses?
Clear lens for indoors and low light, tinted or mirrored with an EN 172 sun filter for outdoor work. Colour does not change mechanical strength, which is shown by the marking.
What does optical class 1 mean on safety eyewear?
It is the class with the least image distortion, suitable for prolonged use. Classes 2 and 3 are intended for shorter or occasional use.
