Hi-vis softshell jackets: comfort and wind protection
A softshell is the halfway house between a sweatshirt and a technical jacket: stretch fabric, soft lining and good wind protection, without the rustle of waterproof garments.
2L or 3L: what is the difference
2-layer (2L) softshells bond an outer fabric to a fleece lining, making them softer and lighter. 3-layer (3L) softshells add a middle membrane that improves wind resistance and water resistance. In both cases a softshell is generally water-repellent, not waterproof: for persistent rain you need certified rain jackets.
Classes and variants
Most models are Class 3 to EN ISO 20471, others Class 2 or 1. You will find two-tone, padded and microfleece-lined versions, a softshell bomber and a women's model. One model is also certified to EN 342 for protection against cold.
When to choose one
It is ideal in spring and autumn for drivers, supervisors and technicians who move around a lot and frequently climb into vehicles. In colder months it can be worn over a hi-vis sweatshirt or fleece: in that case it is the softshell, as the outer layer, that provides visibility. To preserve the membrane and tape, wash at low temperatures without fabric softener, following the label.

Is a hi-vis softshell jacket waterproof?
It is generally water-repellent and windproof, but not certified against rain. For working in the rain for long periods you need a certified rain jacket.
What do 2L and 3L mean on softshell jackets?
They indicate the number of layers: 2L is outer fabric plus lining, 3L adds a middle membrane that improves protection against wind and water.
Can a hi-vis softshell be worn in winter too?
Padded or microfleece-lined models are suited to moderate cold, and one is certified to EN 342. Otherwise, wear it with a sweatshirt or fleece underneath.
