Leather work gloves: rigger, driver and mechanic
Leather resists abrasion well, protects against moderate heat and moulds to the hand with use. It is the classic choice for handling rough materials, construction, loading and unloading and driving work vehicles.
Grain or split, cowhide or goatskin
- Grain leather: the outer layer, smooth and compact; more sensitive and water-resistant.
- Split leather: the inner layer, thicker and rougher; ideal for heavy work.
- Goatskin: thinner and softer than cowhide, for those who need dexterity.
Models and standards
Rigger gloves have a safety cuff and a reinforced or double palm for ropes, pipes and bricks. Grain leather driver gloves offer grip on the steering wheel and controls. All models are certified to EN 388; half also carry EN 407 for heat, one EN 511 for cold. The chainsaw glove is certified to EN 381 Class 1, meaning tested with a chain at 20 metres per second.
Care
Let leather gloves dry away from direct heat sources, which dry the leather out and make it stiff. Welding requires specific models: see welding gloves. For winter, consider thermal gloves, or go back to work gloves.
Domande frequenti
What is the difference between grain and split leather?
Grain leather is the outer layer, smooth and more sensitive; split leather is the inner layer, thicker, rougher and suited to heavy, abrasive work.
What is a rigger glove?
It is a leather glove with a leather or fabric back and a safety cuff, designed for handling ropes, pipes, bricks and rough materials.
What does Class 1 mean on chainsaw gloves?
Under EN 381, Class 1 indicates that the glove has been tested with a chain at a speed of 20 metres per second. It should be worn with the other PPE required for chainsaw use.
